ZIMBABWEAN journalist Peta Thornycroft is among nine journalists honoured by the International Women's Foundation for commitment to their work and for personal sacrifice.

The 62-year-old Thornycroft received the foundation's 2007 Lifetime Achievement award in Washington.

A Zimbabwean citizen, her dispatches are among the few from within the country. Thornycroft, who in 2001 renounced her British citizenship when the Zimbabwe government intensified deportations of foreign journalists, was also recognised for her contribution to the training of journalists.

Also honoured were Mexican Lydia Cacho, Ethiopia's Serkalem Fasil, and six Iraqi women from the McClatchy News Baghdad bureau who all received Courage in Journalism awards.
