Digital
journalism initiation for Zimbabwean journalists
MISA-Zimbabwe
April 24, 2007
Sixteen journalists
drawn from different media houses in Zimbabwe attended a three-day
digital journalism course at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South
Africa as part of efforts to create alternative sources of information
and ideas in view of the shrinking media space in the country.
The course which
was organised by the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa
(OSISA-Zimbabwe) and Rhodes University’s Highway Africa, was run
by Dr Peter Verwey a lecturer with the School of Journalism in Utrecht,
The Netherlands.
Participants
were introduced to the use of blogs, which are personal WebPages
that can easily be accessed through the Internet. During the course
each of the journalists had the opportunity to open their own blogs
from which they are already disseminating and exchanging information
and ideas on current socio-economic and political events in the
country.
The workshop
which was held from 11 – 14 April 2007 also covered issues on how
best to use the Internet as a source of information while getting
the most relevant data, verifying credibility of the websites they
use as research tools, digital story telling and Internet-based
research.
Participants
described the workshop as an eye opener which will enhance their
journalistic skills in view of the research tools and advantages
offered by the convergence and divergence of the ICT revolution.
