Detained journalist still to appear in court
MISA-Zimbabwe
April 03, 2007

Lawyers representing Gift Phiri, a chief reporter with The Zimbabwean who is in police custody are now considering filing for an urgent High Court order compelling the police to produce him before the courts.

The lawyers told MISA-Zimbabwe on 3 April 2007 that they would file for the court order if Phiri is not brought before the courts within the stipulated 48 hours following his arrest two days ago on 1 April 2007.

He was reportedly in bad shape after he was severely assaulted while in police custody following his arrest in Harare on 1 April 2007. MISA-Zimbabwe reliably understands that the police were considering charging Phiri on allegations of practicing journalism without accreditation in terms of the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA).

Phiri was arrested at Sunningdale Shopping Centre on Sunday afternoon. He was briefly taken to Sunningdale Police Post before being transferred to Harare Central Police Station.

The Zimbabwean is published in London by exiled Zimbabwean journalist Wilf Mbanga.
