The South African correspondent for Time magazine was arrested in Zimbabwe on Saturday and was still in custody last night, apparently for entering the country without official media accreditation.

Time journalist Alexander Perry, a British citizen based in Cape Town, was arrested in Zimbabwe at or near the Beit Bridge border post on Saturday, and was being held at the police station in Gwanda, about 200km to the north, sources said.

And several opposition activists who had been injured in police custody were abducted by state security agents from their Harare hospital beds late on Saturday.

Zimbabwe's crackdown continued unabated this weekend despite the Southern African Development Community summit last Thursday, where President Robert Mugabe was told he should stop assaults on opposition politicians, according to South African officials.

The opposition expects another round of official violence this week as the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions launches a general strike for tomorrow and Wednesday to protest against what it says is the government's failure to address the country's spiralling economic crisis, including 80% unemployment. - IFS and Sapa-AP
