March 06, 2007
Bright Chibvuri, the editor of the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) publication, The Worker, was
arrested in Plumtree on 3 March 2007 and spent two nights in police
custody on allegations of practicing journalism without accreditation
under the repressive Access
to Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Chibvuri was released on 5 March 2007 when he appeared in court
on charges of contravening Section 83 (1) of AIPPA which penalises
the practice of journalism without accreditation. He was remanded
out of custody on free bail to 27 March 2007.
The ZCTU's information officer Khumbulani Ndlovu told MISA-Zimbabwe
that Chibvuri was arrested by plainclothes policemen who were in
attendance during an orientation meeting organised by the umbrella
labour union in Plumtree.
"I can confirm that he was released yesterday but I do not
have the exact details and nature of the charges yet as we are still
to communicate with him," said Ndlovu.
