Police question journalist
MISA-Zimbabwe
March 01, 2007

Police in Masvingo on 26 February 2007 questioned freelance journalist Herbert Chikosi following publication of a story by The Zimbabwean alleging that members of the force in the town had refused to sing the national anthem in protest over poor salaries.

Chikosi told MISA-Zimbabwe that he had been interrogated for about 40 minutes by Inspector Nyambo at Masvingo Central Police Station following publication of the story in the weekly’s edition of last week. The story initially appeared on the online publication ZimOnline. The police accused him of writing for Zimonline as Herbert Dapi.  Chikosi denied writing the story.

The police also asked him whether MISA-Zimbabwe had offices in Masvingo and the nature of its activities in the town. “I told them that the MISA offices were in Harare and thereafter they allowed me to leave,” said Chikosi.

In its edition of 22-28 February 2007, The Zimbabwean which credited the story to ZimOnline, said at least 22 police officers had refused to sing the national anthem in protest over poor salaries.
