MISA-Zimbabwe
February 13, 2007
E-TV reporter
and Zimgreats editor, Peter Moyo, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation
cameraman William Gumbo and Trymore Zvidzai, were granted bail on
Friday after being arrested on allegations of practicing journalism
without accreditation.
The three were
arrested in Mutare after they were found in possession of cameras.
Allegations leveled against them are that they used these to film
illegal diamond dealings. Moyo is not accredited to practice as
a journalist in Zimbabwe as dictated by section 79 of the Access
to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA). Zvidzai
has never practiced as a journalist as it is not in his line of
profession.
Under AIPPA (Registration,
Accreditation and Levy) (Amendment) Regulations, 2006 (No.3), foreign
journalists cannot practice in the country without paying an accreditation
fee of $US 100 for temporary accreditation or $US 500 for the year.
Chris Ndlovu,
a lawyer for human rights represented the three. Peter Moyo was
granted $200 000 (US 800) bail while the other two were charged
$100 000 (US 400) each. They were remanded out of custody until
20 February.
Police are still
in possession of the cameras and footage suspected to be taken by
the three.
