The secretary
general of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, Foster Dongozi, has
been elected president of the Southern African Journalists’ Association
(SAJA), writes Gugu Ziyaphapha.
Dongozi, a senior journalist with The Standard, a weekly newspaper,
was elected at a congress held in Johannesburg recently.
Journalists’
unions and associations from 12 countries in the SADC region are
affiliated to SAJA.
Charles Matsebula,
an investigative journalist with the Times of Swaziland, was elected
deputy president. The treasurer’s post went to Isabel Chimangeni,
a chief reporter with the Times of Zambia.
Other executive
committee members are Mushitu Mukwame of the Namibia Broadcasting
Corporation and Albert Makgoba, the secretary general of the Media
Workers Association of South Africa.
SAJA says it
seeks to foster collaborative work between regional trade unions
based on common work place concerns and socio-economic conditions
within which media workers and journalists operate.
It also provides
opportunities and calls for the creation of one voice for journalists
in the region. The association will also provide advanced professional
training for electronic and print journalists while protecting them
from harassment and intimidation.
