ANZ,
insists that the Minister of Information and Publicity, Dr
Tichaona Jokonya(now deceased) has powers to appoint an independent
ad hoc committee to deal with media house’s application to
be registered contrary to his assertions that the Access to
Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) has no provision
for that discretion. In papers filed with the High Court ANZ
acting chief executive officer John Gambanga argued that the
minister could equally appoint the committee in question as
the current Media and Information Commission (MIC) is an ad
hoc committee because its three-year term of office has since
expired.
In his opposing
affidavits the Minister says he can only appoint the committee
in question if AIPPA is duly amended. |

The
trial of VOP directors, being charged under Section 7(1) of
the Broadcasting Services Act (BSA) which prohibits broadcasting
without a license, was postponed to 25 September 2006 after
the state applied for the postponement because its key witness
was in Switzerland.
It, however,
turned out that the state had not subpoenaed its other witnesses
to appear in court at the start of the trial. |
