Masvingo launches community radio station
MISA-Zimbabwe
June 09, 2006

Residents of Masvingo on 3 June 2006 officially launched their community radio station, Wezhira Community Radio Station.

They elected Micah Zinduru as chairperson and Energy Bara, deputy chairperson. The main objectives of this station will be to give the people of Masvingo a voice in line with the provisions of the Broadcasting Services Act that allow for the establishment of community radio stations in Zimbabwe.

The committee also comprises a secretary general, finance secretary, gender secretary, disabilities secretary, community liaison secretaries and an HIV/AIDS secretary. The committee will be tasked with determining the issues affecting the people of Masvingo for purposes of coming up with the relevant radio programmes arising from the issues.

Members of the committee will also conduct a community awareness campaign to further enhance the popularity of the initiative as well as lobby parliamentarians, the Minister of Information and other government officials and the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe for them to be granted a broadcasting license.

Bara is contactable on 091 937 198 and Zinduru on 011 776 662.
