Masvingo
launches community radio station
MISA-Zimbabwe

Residents of
Masvingo on 3 June 2006 officially launched their community radio
station, Wezhira Community Radio Station.
They elected
Micah Zinduru as chairperson and Energy Bara, deputy chairperson.
The main objectives of this station will be to give the people of
Masvingo a voice in line with the provisions of the Broadcasting
Services Act that allow for the establishment of community radio
stations in Zimbabwe.
The committee
also comprises a secretary general, finance secretary, gender secretary,
disabilities secretary, community liaison secretaries and an HIV/AIDS
secretary. The committee will be tasked with determining the issues
affecting the people of Masvingo for purposes of coming up with
the relevant radio programmes arising from the issues.
Members of the
committee will also conduct a community awareness campaign to further
enhance the popularity of the initiative as well as lobby parliamentarians,
the Minister of Information and other government officials and the
Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe for them to be granted a broadcasting
license.
