Retired Chief Justice to probe editor's suspension
MISA-Zimbabwe
November 01, 2005
Retired Chief
Justice Anthony Gubbay will chair an independent labour panel to
determine the suspension of Dr Ibbo Mandaza, the founding chief
executive and editor-in-chief of the Zimbabwe Mirror Newspapers
Group (ZMNG).
Chief Justice
Gubbay’s selection to chair the five-member panel follows High Court
Judge Justice Bharat Patel’s ruling that an independent labour tribunal
be established to look into Mandaza’s suspension by ZMNG board chairman
Jonathan Kadzura.
Justice Patel
made the ruling after Mandaza filed an urgent application seeking
a High Court order nullifying his suspension arguing that it was
illegal and unprocedural.
Mandaza alleges
that his ouster is being engineered by the Central Intelligence
Organisation following its acquisition of the majority shareholding
stake in the publishing company through a company known as Unique
World Investment.
ZMNG are the
publishers of the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror.
