Editor to appear in court
MISA-Zimbabwe
June 16, 2005

Willie Mponda the editor of The Sun, a community newspaper based in Gweru, is expected to appear in court on 17 June 2005 on allegations of publishing falsehoods.

Police in Gweru questioned and recorded a warned and cautioned statement from Mponda on 16 June 2005 following the publication of story alleging that a Gweru woman had committed suicide after her phone-shop had been destroyed during the ongoing countrywide clean-up operation to rid urban areas of illegal structures, street vendors and suspected criminals.

The story was published in the weekly Sun’s edition of 10 June 2005. The police are alleging that the story was false as the woman had left a suicide note claiming that she had decided to kill herself because she was experiencing personal problems.

Mponda told MISA Zimbabwe that he is likely to be charged under a section of the Public Order and Security Act which deals with the publication of falsehoods.
