Journalist faces trial
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 27, 2005

The trial of Kelvin Jakachira, a journalist with the banned Daily News accused of practising without accreditation in terms of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), has been set for 1 August 2005.

Jakachira’s trial date was set on 28 May 2005 when he appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.

If convicted, he risks spending two years in jail or $600 000 fine or both imprisonment or fine in terms of Section 83 of AIPPA for practising journalism without being accredited by the government-controlled Media and Information Commission.

The State alleges that Jakachira practised as an unaccredited journalist between 1 January 2003 and September 13 of the same year.

According to the State he only stopped practising without accreditation following the Supreme Court judgment on 13 September 2003 which ruled that the Daily News was operating illegally leading to its closure.
