Journalist released
MISA-Zimbabwe

Frank Chikowore, the freelance journalist who was assaulted by police before being detained at Harare Central Police station was on 19 May 2005 released without charges after spending a night in police cells.

Chikowore was released around 7pm on 19 May 2005 following his arrest the previous day.

He was arrested while covering a police blitz during which armed police swooped on flea markets around the central business district confiscating goods worth millions of dollars and assaulting people in the process.

He was severely assaulted by the police before being thrown into cells at Harare Central Police Station together with several street vendors and suspected criminals rounded up during the police operation code named Operation Restore Order.

His video camera, press accreditation card and two notebooks which had been confiscated by the police were returned to him following his release.
