MISA-Zimbabwe
October 13, 2004

Richard Musazulwa, a special correspondent with the privately-owned Standard weekly newspaper appeared in court today (13 October 2004) on charges of publishing falsehoods under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) arising from a story published in January this year.

He was charged with contravening Section 80 (1) (b) of AIPPA which deals with the publication of falsehoods. He was granted $ 50 000 bail and remanded to 26 October 2004.

Musazulwa who is based in the Midlands town of Gweru was questioned by the police yesterday in connection with the story published by the Standard on 4 January 2004.

On 4 January 2004, the Standard published a story titled: ZNA Recruits Flee Training.

The story claimed that half of the 39 recruits at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in Gweru had in 2003 deserted camp due to hunger and rigorous training.

Musazulwa was allegedly harassed and threatened by soldiers following publication of the story. He reported the harassment to police in Gweru.
