arrested over army story
MISA-Zimbabwe

Richard Musazulwa, a special correspondent with the privately-owned
Standard weekly newspaper appeared in court today (13 October 2004)
on charges of publishing falsehoods under the Access to Information
and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) arising from a story published
in January this year.
He was charged
with contravening Section 80 (1) (b) of AIPPA which deals with the
publication of falsehoods. He was granted $ 50 000 bail and remanded
to 26 October 2004.
Musazulwa who
is based in the Midlands town of Gweru was questioned by the police
yesterday in connection with the story published by the Standard
on 4 January 2004.
On 4 January
2004, the Standard published a story titled: ZNA Recruits Flee Training.
The story claimed
that half of the 39 recruits at the Zimbabwe Military Academy in
Gweru had in 2003 deserted camp due to hunger and rigorous training.
Musazulwa was
allegedly harassed and threatened by soldiers following publication
of the story. He reported the harassment to police in Gweru.
