Journalists still in custody
MISA-Zimbabwe
October 06, 2004

Photo-journalists Tsvangirai Mukwazhi, Desmond Kwande and Howard Burditt, were still being detained at Harare Police Station on 6 October 2004 a day after they were arrested outside Parliament Buildings in Harare while conducting their professional duties.

Lawyers representing the three told MISA-Zimbabwe at around 4.30 pm that they were hopeful their clients would be released today without being charged as they are all registered with the Media and Information Commission (MIC) in terms of the law.

The photo-journalists were arrested while covering a demonstration by women protestors demonstrating against the proposed Non-Governmental Organisations Bill. The Bill seeks to ban foreign funding to Ngos involved in human rights and governance issues.

Mukwazhi and Burditt are freelance photo-journalists while Kwande works for the privately-owned Daily Mirror.

Several of the women protestors who are members of the pressure group, Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), were also arrested on 5 October 2004 shortly after they had delivered a petition to the House opposing the Bill.
