Journalists freed
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 20, 2004

The Standard newspaper editor, Bornwell Chakaodza and reporter Valentine Maponga were released from police custody last night, 19 May, at around 7 pm.

The two had been arrested the same day and spent 5 hours in police custody. They were charged under Section 15 of Public Order and Security Act for allegedly writing a false story. The police recorded a warned and cautioned statement before releasing the two. Both Chakaodza and Maponga told MISA-Zimbabwe they were relieved to be out of police custody. They said the police did not harass them but complained bitterly that the whole newspaper, from the first page to the last was attacking the government. Police are to proceed by way of summons should they want to pursue the matter.
