Play
banned
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 12, 2004
The Zimbabwe
Censorship Board has banned a satirical play, Super Patriots
and Morons, performed by Rooftop promotions, one of Zimbabwe's
leading theatre and drama companies.
The play portrays
an unnamed African country ruled by an out-of-touch president. It
features among other things fuel queues and food shortages, which
in essence are both common problems in Zimbabwe. The play centers
around a president who does not know what the people want. So he
sends an official to find out. The Official finds that people are
complaining about food and fuel shortages.
The play’s producer
Daves Guzha told the media that he intends to appeal against the
decision by the Censorship Board for banning the public performance
of the play.
"It’s a
sad development. Its all about freedom of expression in what is
supposed to be a democracy, which is being frustrated," said
Guzha.
The censorship
board has not explained why it banned the play. And no comment could
be drawn from its officers. The play has been staged a number of
occasions in Harare’s Theatre in Park and other centers in the country
since 2003.
