Sky News crew told to leave again
MISA-Zimbabwe
May 12, 2004

The Minister for Information and Publicity Professor Jonathan Moyo has written to the Sky News television crew, currently filming a documentary in Zimbabwe, to leave because its accreditation period has expired.

The Sky crew came into the country to film a documentary on the Zimbabwean situation. The crew was invited by the ruling ZANU PF Secretary for Information Dr Nathan Shamuyarira.

In a letter to Mr. Ben de Pear, a Sky News producer the Minister Moyo wrote," The department notes that you claim completion of the first part of your assignment for which you were accredited. This in effect means that your accreditation has expired as of today, 10 May 2004."

The journalists entered Zimbabwe in April on a mission to produce a television documentary project featuring Zimbabwe’s land reform programme, President Robert Mugabe and the national youth service.

The Department of Information had strongly objected to the accreditation of the crew saying Sky News should have sought accreditation whilst still in Britain. The Department of Information was however prevailed upon by the ruling party resulting in the accreditation of the crew for a short period of time.
