Zimbabwe
Journalists Under Fire Campaign
MISA-Zimbabwe
April 30, 2004
The Media in
Zimbabwe is under constant attack from state organs, repressive
media laws, and those individuals who wish to restrict the free
flow of information. Media practitioners face detention, arrest,
threats and bombings.
Since 2000 over
100 media workers that include journalists, photographers, drivers,
publishers and even readers have been arrested for various "crimes",
under such laws as the Access to information and Protection of Privacy
Act (AIIPA), Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and many other
colonial laws that remain in our statutes. Others have been banned,
newspapers have been destroyed and readers beaten for reading certain
newspapers. This environment has put the media under siege and freedom
of expression in peril.
As part of its
monitoring activity the Media Institute of Southern Africa-Zimbabwe
Chapter, issues alerts to publicise media freedom and freedom of
expression violations. These alerts are complied in an annual publication,
So this is Democracy?
Which further reviews the state of the media in 11 Southern Africa
countries?
MISA-Zimbabwe
is therefore launching the "Zimbabwe Journalists under fire
campaign" to complement its monitoring work. Although MISA-Zimbabwe's
alerts help to expose violations of the rights of journalists, the
issuing of an alert unfortunately does not guarantee the protection
of journalists and to other media workers. Practical follow-up is
required to forward the momentum and opportunities created by action
alerts.
