Statement on the raid on Edwina Spicer's home
Media Institute of Southern Africa - Zimbabwe Chapter (MISA-Zimbabwe)
June 07, 2003

MISA-Zimbabwe expresses its concern over the raiding of the home of film and documentary producer, Edwina Spicer's home last night, 6 June. MISA-Zimbabwe strongly condemns the beating of the gardener, maid and guards (names withheld for security reasons) who were tending to the property while the Spicer's are on holiday.

The raid was carried out by eight men in four cars, all wearing police uniforms and driving police cars. This act can only be regarded as criminal since no search warrant was shown or produced.

The manner in which this search was carried out clearly spells out the danger media workers are under as the motive for these illegal actions is unclear.

We urge the police to desist from such acts and implore them not to confiscate equipment without the requisite judicial authority. As we have always pointed out it is the duty of a professional police force to protect the citizens of this country. As such we call upon those who seized equipment and Z$50 0000 to return the equipment and the money to the rightful owner. Efforts were made to contact the police for a comment, but all this proved fruitless.
