FAMWZ condemns the arrest of media practitioners
Federation
of African Media Women Zimbabwe (FAMWZ)
June 18, 2002
The Federation
of African Media Women Zimbabwe (FAMWZ) has condemned the assault
and arrest of three Daily News staffers on Sunday.
The staffers have not been allowed any access to medical attention
for those who sustained injuries despite recommendations by a medical
doctor.
FAMWZ National Director, Abigail Gamanya urged all media houses
to come together and protest against the continued attack on media
practitioners.
" There is a lot of fear among journalists because of the arrests
being made which are uncalled for.
" Its high time we put a stop to this continued madness being experienced
by journalists to allow them to do their work without any interference,"
she said.
She said the police needed to be made aware of the journalism profession
so they would not just pounce on media practitioners as they pleased.
" The duty of a journalist is to be where the news is. In this case,
the reporter and his colleagues were covering an event of which
they were warranted to do."
FAMWZ is also concerned by the continued attack on the paper's photographer,
Urginia Mauluka who has been brutally attached twice this year.
"We are supposed to be celebrating the good job that Mauluka is
doing, not making life unbearable for her," said Gamanya.
She also called on the police Commissioner, Augustine Chihuri to
order the immediate release of Mauluka, Guthrie Munyuki and their
driver, Shadreck Mukwecheni.
