Women radio journalists from southern Africa are invited to apply for a 10-day training program on reporting on HIV/AIDS. Organized by the African Women's Media Center, the program will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from June 18 to June 29, 2002.

Application deadline: May 24, 2002

The training will cover information that is vital to covering HIV/AIDS, provide an overview on the basics of journalism and offer an opportunity for hands-on training in radio production.

The program will be divided into two components:

  • The first four days will be spent on reporting on HIV/AIDS.
  • This will be followed by six days of instruction in technical radio production using HIV/AIDS issues as content.

The AWMC will select 20 entry-to mid-level women radio journalists and will cover costs for attending the program. In addition, other journalists will be invited to participate in panel discussions and presentations.

Applicants must have a minimum of two years experience working in radio and strong interest in the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. English proficiency is required.

During the HIV/AIDS training session participants will:

  • Look at the complex issues surrounding HIV/AIDS in the region by meeting with area experts, doctors and organizations working on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness; and
  • Explore the media's responsibility in disseminating accurate and up-to-date information about HIV/AIDS.

During the technical radio training component participants will:

  • Receive hands-on instruction in radio production;
  • Develop and produce stories; and
  • Conduct interviews and produce radio programs on women and HIV/AIDS that can be aired from their home radio stations.

Interested candidates should fill out the application and return it to the AWMC office in Johannesburg, via

  • fax at 27.11.327.0242, or
