Manyenyeni new Mayor of Harare

Bernard Manyenyeni,
a 48 year-old General Manager with an insurance firm has been overwhelmingly
elected the new mayor of Harare. He will be deputized by Thomas
Muzuva, who was also elected on Monday.
Manyenyeni,
a ward 17 MDC-T councilor in Mount Pleasant garnered 38 votes against
seven of his Zanu-PF rival Beadle Gwasira of Ward 7, Avondale.
Manyenyeni will
replace lawyer Muchadeyi Masunda and serve a five-year term.
Muzuva, a MDC-T
councilor in Kambuzuma confirmed the results of the Mayoral election
telling SW Radio Africa that he expected to work well with Manyenyeni
and the rest of the councilors. Muzuva beat Zanu-PF’s Samuel
Garachani of Ward 40, Dzivarasekwa.
In Bulawayo,
the MDC-T’s Martin Moyo was also overwhelmingly voted for
as the new mayor of the city. Moyo, an insurance broker with Old
Mutual will have Gift Banda, a Ward 5 MDC-T councilor and local
businessman as his deputy.
The new mayors
and their deputies have all been chosen from a pool of elected councilors,
contrary to reports by the MDC-T that they were going to choose
from those that did not contest
the council elections.
