Residents call for an immediate water solution
Chitungwiza Progressive Residents Association
June 24, 2013

Water and sewer reticulation services continue to be a challenge in Chitungwiza as many suburbs are still experiencing perennial sewer pipe bursts while water cuts are almost on a daily basis. Chitungwiza Municipality has failed to renovate dilapidated infrastructure that was installed during the Rhodesian era. Chitungwiza is yet to come up with a clear and acceptable plan that will guarantee residents enough water for both domestic and industrial consumption. It blames Harare City Council for water cuts and Government for unfunded mandates, insufficient funds and late disbursements despite its revenue and capital expenditure.

In Saint Marys, near Zengeza 1 and Manyame Park, residents are using sewer water for domestic purposes, like washing, cleaning plates and bathing. This is hazardous and a recipe for disaster. In Unit L, M, N residents seldom fetch water from the tap except on Thursday only every week, whilst residents in Zengeza 3 get tap water every Tuesday with no hope when this situation is going to be abated. Those with boreholes are now charging 3 Rand per bucket and open their gates at their own convenience. Many residents have resorted to drilling boreholes, which the council and EMMA are saying is not safe for drinking. The poor are finding it difficult as it is difficult for them to get 2 rand for vegetables per day.

We urge all concerned to ensure that water is available or else we risk the advent of cholera and other water borne diseases. Some of the UNICEF and Constituency Development Fund erected boreholes are now defunct, CHIPRA appeals to the corporate world to assist .If you deny people water, you have denied them life.

Chitungwiza Progressive Residents Association remains resolute in advocating for better service delivery.
