Service delivery update
Combined Harare
Residents Association (CHRA)
November 21, 2012
Water still
remains a scarce commodity in Harare and some parts outside Harare
such as Ruwa are now clocking two months without even a single drop
coming out of their taps. Due to this scarcity of water, media reports
have indicated that at least four people have died from typhoid
in Glen-view. Over the weekend, areas in the eastern side of town
mainly in Hillside, Mabvuku, Greendale and highlands had no water
from Friday until Monday.
Although the
Waste Management Department has purchased an additional 20 refuse
trucks to improve the refuse collection process; not much has really
changed; heaps of uncollected garbage are pilling in many suburbs
like Mufakose, Mbare and Dzivarasekwa. The Waste Management Department
is blaming this on shortages of fuel to effectively carry out their
job. Toilets at Mbare Msika have not been functioning as a result
of blockages hence people are now forced to walk beyond the bus
termini to relieve themselves.
ZESA argues
that the recent court judgment compelling the parastatal to revert
to tariffs which were charged before the September 1 2011 increment
will surely hurt electricity provision. This was felt on Monday
when most parts of the CBD and other areas that surround town especially
in Eastlea, Newlands, Hillside and Belvedere went for the whole
day without electricity.
