Cry our beloved treated water
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
September 20, 2012

Many people and especially our City fathers do not seem to realize that every drop of water matters until the day people woke up to dry taps in most suburbs of Harare. If you take a walk along the City center alone for at least an hour it's rare for one not to come across treated water flowing along streets in the C.B.D. It seems like more of Harare's water is now being channeled through drains rather than the conventional water pipes. Lately, City of Harare announced that it would soon be rationing water because of its failure to meet the rising demand for water. The city has confessed that it is losing at least 50% of treated water due to leaks. This statement can be described as reckless because today alone, CHRA recorded at least 8 water bursts in the C.B.D. This shows the extent at which water woes can get worse as long as treated water is channeled towards the wrong destination. The Ministry of Finance last year released at least 18 million for the City to replace old water pipes and that program witnessed massive digging in town with some roads being blocked for days. One wonders what happened to all that investment.

In a bid to realize effective and efficient service delivery in Harare, CHRA has designed a service delivery website that is dedicated at reporting service failure especially burst sewer or water pipes. The website can be accessed on www.tauratinzwe.org. This website allows anyone with internet access to report any incident of service failure in real time and the data uploaded is quickly transferred to the CHRA office where the backhand personnel will then swiftly report this to the responsible authorities.
