City of Bulawayo receives refuse compactors
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents Association (BPRA)
June 20, 2012
The city of
Bulawayo this morning (20 June 2012) received a donation of three
refuse compactors under a programme that includes a partnership
between the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) and the German government
through GIZ and Australian Aid. The donation was handed over to
the Mayor of Bulawayo, councillor Thaba Moyo by the Germany ambassador
to Zimbabwe, Dr Albrecht Conze in a ceremony that was attended by
members of parliament, councillors, senators, BCC leaders and heads
of department, representatives of Non-Governmental Organisations
and residents representatives. The compactors are expected to go
a long way in alleviating the problems that the city has been facing
with refuse collection in the past few years. The programme is an
extension of the Bulawayo Water and Sanitation Emergency Response
(BOWSER) project which hitherto has been focusing on water sanitation
and solid waste.
In addition
to the three refuse compactors, the donation also included protective
clothing and boots for refuse collectors, a guarantee for maintenance
of the compactors, and technical, financial and strategic assistance.
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents Association (BPRA) welcomes the donation as a positive
step towards improving refuse collection in Bulawayo, and commends
BCC for seeking alternatives to improving service delivery in the
face of a restrictive economic environment. The association will
continue to monitor refuse collection in the city to ensure that
the refuse compactors improve refuse collection in the city and
contribute in the restoration of Bulawayo's image as one of
the cleanest cities in Africa. In addition, the association will
continue to urge residents to avoid illegal dumping of waste and
unnecessary littering through its consultative meetings and training
workshops.
