Service delivery update
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
March 05, 2012

For the past two weeks, local media has been awash with news that residents are drinking contaminated water from Lake Chivero because Harare City Council (HCC) does not have a working sewer disposal system. This has also coincided with an average 3000 residents who have visited local clinics and hospitals with suspected Typhoid cases. To date two people have died of Typhoid notwithstanding the fact that there might be some other unrecorded cases within the 46 ward boundaries of Harare. The stark reality that is sprouting from all these facts is that all efforts to try and curb diarrheal diseases shall continue to go in vain as long as the common denominator, which is the sewage disposal system, is not addressed. These revelations have justified the recurrent nature of these medieval diseases which continue to affect most parts of Harare. The association urges government and all other stakeholders to come in and assist the local authority in coming up with a functional sewage disposal unit that can guarantee safe water for Harare residents. The continued contamination of Lake Chivero demands that the local authority invests at least 8-10 chemicals in treating the water. However, CHRA has it on good grounds that a South-African chemical supplier Zatachem is currently doing a trial purification using only four chemicals. We commend the City fathers for showing commitment in trying to find lasting solutions, but however, we urge them to urgently prioritize this matter and deal with the situation once and for all. There is need for stakeholder intervention and we urge the Mayor, who is the face of council to drive this process in consultation with residents.
