  • City of Harare orders 610 more households to be re-connected
    Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
    February 15, 2012

A delegation comprising of the Deputy Mayor of Harare, Councilor E.Chiroto, CHRA Director Mfundo Mlilo and CHRA program officer Reuben Akili visited houses in Dzivarasekwa this morning to assess the water reconnection exercise. The delegation established that of the 300 households that CHRA had identified, only a very few had been reconnected. Further to that, the houses that CHRA had identified are only but half of the total disconnected houses. Records at the district office show that on the 11th of September 2011, the District officer for Dzivarasekwa ordered at least 610 households to be disconnected and up to now these were not receiving any water services. The Deputy Mayor and Town Clerk, Dr. T Mahachi ordered that all the 610 households to be immediately reconnected.

The delegation then toured some of the households without water and realized that amongst those affected, were disabled people and others who voluntarily come out open with the Mayor that they where H.I.V positive and some were looking after their relatives living with H.I.V and AIDS. The Deputy Mayor also took time to tour houses without toilets and was very much stunned by the situation that is prevailing in these areas despite the reports they are getting from Departmental Directors during full council meetings. This tour is most likely to end the Director of housing and water in trouble mainly because they have on several occasions delivered a favorable report to full council and rubbished any claims and reports that have been made on the real situation on the ground.

The delegation was stunned when the District officers failed to identify the Deputy Mayor, prompting the intervention of the CHRA Director who had to introduce the Deputy Mayor to the officers. This was despite the fact that in the district office, there are many charts that have the names and faces of all councilors in Harare with the Mayor included as well.
