BPRA again requests for an investigation of Minister Chombo
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents Association (BPRA)
August 05, 2011
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents Association (BPRA) yesterday (4 August 2011) wrote to
the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Governance, the Clerk
of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament requesting an investigation
of Dr Ignatius Chombo, the Minister of Local Government, Rural and
Urban Development. This will be the second time that the association
is making such a request after a similar one that was made in January
2011 was rejected by the Clerk of Parliament.
In January 2011,
BPRA wrote to Parliament
requesting an investigation of Minister Chombo to ascertain how
he acquired the vast properties he is alleged to own on a ministerial
salary. This was after revelations in November 2010 that Minister
Chombo owns numerous properties across the country, including dozens
of residential properties, residential stands and commercial stands,
and dozens of vehicles and farming equipment. A response
from the Clerk of Parliament, Mr Austin Zvoma (dated 20 January
2011) informed the association that such an investigation could
not be carried out.
BPRA however
believes that it is the duty of parliament to monitor the excesses
of public officials, and in line with that investigate cases of
alleged corruption. Allegations that Minister Chombo owns vast properties
across the country therefore cannot go without formal enquiry. BPRA
also requested that all local authorities where Minister Chombo
is alleged to own properties should also be investigated.
