Chombo brings Chitungwiza Town Council to a halt
Chitungwiza
Progressive Residents
July 23, 2011
The Chitungwiza Progressive Residents Association is shocked
by the continued deterioration of service delivery in Chitungwiza.
It is our view that the continued interference of Ignatius Chombo,
the Local Government Minister in the affairs of the city of Chitungwiza
is the major stumbling block towards the achievement of improved
service delivery, accountability and transparency, a core demand
by the residents of Chitungwiza. CHIPRA wishes to make it clear
to Ignatius Chombo, the town clerk, the councilors and all those
at town house that they will all be held to account for the massive
looting of council property and land at the expense of residents
who have been on waiting list for residential stands for decades.
The guaranteed immunity to the corrupt and incompetent councilors
by Minister Chombo has seen the residents of Chitungwiza going for
more than two weeks without water, erratic and unreliable collection
of refuse and a complete halt in the rehabilitation of the city's
roads. Currently market stalls normally designated and paid for
by vendors in St Mary´s and Zengeza 3 are at the center of
an ownership dispute between the residents and the greedy council
officials.
CHIPRA calls
upon the Principals to the inclusive government to conduct a probe
into the alleged corrupt activities of Minister Chombo, the Town
Clerk of Chitungwiza, the Mayor, the Director of Housing, the expelled
councilors and the whole staff at town house so as to avert a looming
health hazard reminiscent of the 2008 - 2009 cholera outbreak.
The people of Chitungwiza are urgently calling for transparency
and efficient service delivery. We also call upon for the urgent
revisiting of the Local
Government Act which gives Minister Chombo and his appointed
Town Clerk more powers than the people of Chitungwiza themselves.
The Chitungwiza
Progressive Residents Association will not rest until the mess that
has infested our local authority has been cleaned.
