Voices from the community
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
July 20, 2011

A voice from the community is a platform created for residents to directly vent out their concerns with regards to service delivery. In this issue, Ward 40 coordinator narrates the state of service delivery in their community.

On behalf of the residents of ward 40, I would like to extend our displeasure on the state of service delivery in Dzivarasekwa. To begin with, we held a consultative meeting on the 6th of July bringing together residents of Dzivarasekwa, but stakeholders from ZESA and City of Harare did not attend. The meeting went on but no tangible response arose from that meeting. To that end, we made our own resolutions and agreed to implement them as a community. Dzivarasekwa has been marred by a crisis of service delivery. Our roads have become a nightmare for motorists. Refuse collection remains erratic and sewer pipes are not attended timeously posing a health time bomb to the community. We are not happy with the way ZESA bills continuously sky rocket even after settling previous bills and also given the consistent power cuts. We have raised these issues with the local office but to no avail. However, we have since agreed to send a delegation to the ZESA main office. Being that as it may, we the residents of Dzivarasekwa ward 40, have resolved to stop funding ZESA and City of Harare if they continue to provide erratic services. We call on the City of Harare to urgently attend to our rutted roads and all burst sewer pipes by mid-August. ZESA should immediately sort out its billing system and stop charging exorbitant rates. We are welcome for engagement at any time with the mentioned stakeholders.
