Tafara residents' alert
Harare Residents Trust
March 08, 2011

The Harare Residents' Trust notes with increasing concern the deployment of military officers in communities and the continuous intimidation of residents in their localities by suspected ZANU-PF activists. ZANU-PF is reported to have held a political rally in Tafara at a place commonly identified as Zvidhina area. Residents were forced to attend the meeting.

Issues discussed at the meeting include the following:

  • That the residents should always attend ZANU-PF meetings whether they want or not.
  • The residents are supposed to support ZANU-PF party whether they like it or not.
  • That the residents are supposed to march to the Show Grounds on 02 March 2011 in protest against the sanctions. They went.
  • There is no one who is supposed to work on the day but to go and attend the anti sanctions campaign.
  • That all commuter bus operators are supposed to ferry residents to the show ground for the activity.

Besides this, on 27 of February military vehicles were deployed in Tafara and patrolled Bhobho area. The Tafara residents raised alarm telling the HRT that this was instilling fear in them, and they genuinely feared that they would be harassed and beaten up. Even now they still believe they might be terrorized.

The HRT condemns any political party that coerces people to rally behind their campaigns. The Vision of HRT is to see a free and prosperous citizenry. Political parties should desist from this culture and ensure that they earn the support of the citizenry rather than force them to be their followers. A willing mind is able to help build the party, but an unwilling person can work from inside to destroy that party which uses force to make them think as they want.
