BPRA complains to Officer Commanding Traffic Police in Bulawayo
Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA)
February 10, 2011

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) has written to the Officer Commanding Traffic Police in Bulawayo, Superintendent Henry Mhlanga, requesting an immediate end to the current impasse between police and commuter omnibus operators. This follows altercations between traffic police officers and commuter omnibus operators at Basch Street Terminus yesterday (9 February 2011) in which shots had to be fired in the air to quell the situation. Commuters were left stranded at the terminus after the incident. BPRA believes the altercation was a result of the current traffic police operation targeting commuter omnibuses. BPRA acknowledges that it is the duty of traffic police to maintain order in roads, but questions the intensity of the operation and the focus on commuter omnibuses while private vehicles are ignored. BPRA also believes the operation could be an attempt to instill fear in citizens of Zimbabwe since there is a possibility of elections being held this year.
