Residents keen to clamp down on corruption

Residents Association in collaboration with Transparency
International - Zimbabwe (T.I.Z) yesterday (Tuesday 12/10/10),
held a consultative meeting on corruption, transparency and accountability
in Luveve (ward 15) at the Beithall. The meeting was a continuation
of the road show hosted by the two organisations the previous day.
The meeting was held to conscientize residents on the importance
of transparency and accountability of public officials. Through
an initiative by BPRA, residents were given the opportunity to interact
with representatives from T.I.Z, on areas which they felt were most
affected by corruption and how these corrupt tendencies affect them
as recipients of service provisions. In addition to the consultative
meeting, residents got the chance to give their own insight on how
corruption should be combated in Zimbabwe, most residents exhibited
thorough knowledge on the role of society in fuelling corrupt tendencies.
Residents reiterated that structures that are set by the government
to combat corruption should be independent bodies that are void
of government influence - the 'chief culprit' when it
comes to corruption. The meeting was attended by more than 60 residents
that applauded the partnership between BPRA and T.I.Z in reaching
out to people on issues to do with corruption, which to many residents,
is the main contributor to our country's downfall.
BPRA will be staging
a demonstration against ZESA in a bid to call for improved service
provision and compliance with the Competition and Tariffs Commission's
directive. The demonstration will be at the city centre on 27 October
2010. Other civic organisations and members of the public are welcome
to take part. Further details will be communicated soon.
