CHRA condemns the unlawful arrests of human rights defenders

Residents Association (CHRA)
March 25, 2010
The Combined
Harare Residents Association (CHRA) condemns the unlawful arrest
and detention of the Director of Zimrights, Mr. Okay Machisa. Mr
Machisa was arrested while finalizing the launch of a photo
exhibition code named 'Reflections' at the City
Gallery. The photo exhibition was meant to highlight the human rights
violations that were committed during the 2008 Presidential elections
which saw many Zimbabwean being tortured while others were murdered.
The ZRP seized the photos on the pretext that Zimrights
did not seek to get the consent of those captured in the pictures.
What is saddening
is the fact that the arrest came at a time when the Government is
talking about national healing, reconciliation and political tolerance.
The continued attacks on human rights defenders are a clear indication
of bad faith on the part of the security forces as they perpetuate
human rights violations. CHRA stands in solidarity with Mr. Machisa
and other Human Rights Defenders who have been objects of continuous
harassment from State agents.
Our
fight for impartiality continues unabated.
CHRA remains
committed to fighting for democracy; advocating for good, transparent
and accountable local (and national) governance as well as lobbying
for quality and affordable municipal services on a non partisan
basis.
