Eastern
suburbs get lease of life as water supplies resume after years of
dry spells
Combined Harare
Residents Association (CHRA)
February 24, 2010
Harare eastern
suburbs of Masasa, Mabvuku-Tafara, Glen Lorne, Chisipite and parts
of Mandara started receiving water supplies after more than two
years of a dry spell. Water supplies resumed on Thursday evening
in most of these areas. The new development has been attributed
to the repairing of a major leak along the Letombo mainline, which
had not been fixed for more than two years. Water supplies in Msara
Park resumed after four consecutive weeks of a dry spell.
Greendale also
received water supplies but residents have complained of the poor
quality. It has been reported that the water has mouldy substances,
which are green in colour. The pipe leaked in Fallon Avenue has
resulted in large amounts of treated water being lost. It has been
like that for over 3 years now. In kampfinsa and areas near Courtney
Selous School, the pressure of water is very low.
Braeside received
water on three occasions during the past week but the water was
muddy and brownish in colour. Residents who reside in Derbyshire
and Zindoga areas of Waterfalls have also raised concerns on the
quality of water. In Uplands and Parktown, the pressure of the water
is usually low during daytime and high during the night.
Refuse
collection
Greendale
- Refuse is not being collected and residents have
resorted to digging up pits in their backyards. Dumping sites have
sprouted at an undeveloped area in Latimer road towards Harare drive
and near Masasa shopping center behind the water tanks. Industries
and households are also dumping garbage in the area.
Braeside
- Garbage trucks are seen moving around empty because
they do not notify residents in time. Dumping sites have also mushroomed
in the area for example corner Joshua Nkomo and Geepe Road behind
Crandorne Post Office, corner Joshua Nkomo and Caen road.
Waterfalls
- refuse was last collected last year in July and
now residents have dug up pits in their backyards. Residents have
also resorted to burning garbage, which is not environmentally healthy
as it leads to air pollution.
Dzivarasekwa
- Dumpsites have mushroomed along Kubatana road,
Taderera curve and Dzivarasekwa 2 shops. The rubbish bins, which
were placed at the shops by GOAL, have filled up and they are spilling
garbage on the ground.
Glen
Norah - In Glen Norah B, the space behind Glen Norah
High 2 is slowly turning into a heap of garbage. In Glen Norah A,
garbage is accumulating near Zuvarabuda Primary School and the open
area near Gazaland shopping center.
Electricity
The level of
power cuts has increased in most suburbs during the past week due
to the rains. The situation has however, been worsened by ZEDC that
has embarked ona disconnection exercise for residents who have outstanding
bills.
CHRA remains
committed to advocating for good, transparent and accountable local
governance as well as lobbying for quality municipal services.
