Residents Association (BPRA)
December 15, 2009
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents Association held its Residents' Convention on Sunday the
13th of December at Raylton Sports Club in Bulawayo. The convention
brought together 650 residents in the association's leadership from
the 29 wards of Bulawayo. The thrust of the convention was to evaluate
the activities of the association in the last 2 years and elect
substantive leadership since the last executive council was interim.
The convention was officially opened by the Minister of State in
Prime Minister, Honorable Godern Moyo and was attended by 17 councilors,
9 Members of Parliament and 3 Senators from the city of Bulawayo.
Amongst the issues discussed in the convention include high tariffs
from ZESA, Telone and Bulawayo City Council. The association also
looked into the issues of HIV/AIDS and the role of the community
in combating the scourge and the role of the association in fighting
environmental degradation. Emphasis was also put in strategies that
ensure the participation of previously disadvantaged groups like
women, youths and the disabled. Elections for the new executive
council were conducted by Zimbabwe
Electoral Support Network (ZESN). Most of the office bearers
in the previous executive council were retained and mandated to
continue leading the association.
