  • Constitutional discussion meetings update
    Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA)
    November 23, 2009

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA), partnering with Bulawayo Agenda over the weekend held four constitutional discussion meetings in Gwabalanda, Nketa, Magwegwe and Matsheumhlophe, Bulawayo. The meetings have been initiated in order to give residents in Bulawayo a platform for debate and interaction as a way of inputting into the current constitutional discourse.

The meetings target residents from a wide spectrum of diverse socio-political and religious backgrounds, with the aim of reaching out to those individuals who do not benefit from attending political rallies, not exclusive of those who attend rallies. Issues that came out in the meetings were that there should be a clear framework to guarantee full participation of residents and ensuring that residents' inputs are safeguarded. Members drawn from the civic society, Parliamentary select committee and the thematic committees have been called into the forums to address residents.

Of particular concern have also been the delays in the starting of the consultations which have not been explained. To-date, members of the thematic committees have not been trained yet. The information that came out during the course of the meetings was that the process may take off early next year, but from the look of things that also remains tentative. Meanwhile, the association also held three training workshops where newly elected ward representatives have been trained in leadership and advocacy.
