CHRA calls for a peaceful residents' march as negotiations with the Mayor fail to yields results
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
October 01, 2009

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) is conducting a peaceful march next Monday the 5th of October 2009. CHRA membership is gathering at corner 1st street and Gorge Silundika at 11 00hrs and will march along the following route towards the Town House; Gorge Silundika into Angwa to Inez Terez and Julius Nyerere. The March is a protest against the following critical issues;

  • Exorbitant Rates and other levies being charged by the City Council
  • The fact that we have been paying the Rates but there is no proportional improvement of service delivery in Harare.
  • Poor prioritization of issues by the City Council as manifested in the recent purchase of three executive cars at a cost of over US$300 000.00 yet service delivery remains very poor and non existent in some areas.

We also take this opportunity to condemn the unwarranted interference in the Council business by the Minister of Local Government. The Minister has rescinded several council resolutions meant to expose and stamp out corruption by previous councils and commissions. The residents will submit a petition that highlight the demands of the residents to the City Council. CHRA has since informed the Mayor of this march and anticipates him to receive the residents at 1200hrs on this day at his offices. The decision to stage this protest was arrived at after meetings between CHRA and the Mayor failed to produce anything with respect to the above mentioned issues. A press conference will also be conducted soon after the march at the CHRA offices at 1400hrs. CHRA remains steadfast and creative in its advocacy for quality and affordable service delivery in Harare as well as democratic, good local governance in Zimbabwe.
