update
Bulawayo Progressive
Residents' Association
May 05, 2009
Bulawayo Progressive Residents association has been
carrying out activities in the city as a way of mobilising residents
to participate in community initiatives. The following is a summation
of the activities.
1.
Clean-Up Campaigns
Following the
launch of the Clean-up campaign in Mzilikazi suburb a month ago,
the association has been carrying out a number of these campaigns
in the rest of the suburbs in the city of Bulawayo. Surbubs such
as Emganwini, Sizinda, Tshabalala, and Bellevue, amongst others
have been part of the initiative. Residents' participation throughout
these exercises has been overwhelming, with attendants ranging from
600 to 1 000 in each of the areas. The campaigns will continue in
the same manner and culminate into the commemorations of the World
Environment Day on June 5.
2. Ward
Consultative Meetings
The association
has been conducting consultative meetings in the city to provide
residents with an opportunity to air their views regarding any issues
affecting them as residents of Bulawayo. These meetings that were
held in community halls and schools were attended by an average
of 300 - 500 residents. The meetings were addressed by officials
from the association together with ward councillors. Residents took
advantage of the meetings to reject the proposed Bulawayo City Council
Budget and subsequently, the association has since written to the
City Council to officially object to the announced budget and lobby
for its immediate reduction.
3. TB
Awareness Workshops
Through its
secretary for health, BPRA is conducting workshops on TB awareness
at ward levels. The workshops are being done in collaboration with
Community Based Early TB Diagnosis and Consultancy and they target
Home based care givers, support groups and ordinary residents. An
average of 60 people has been consistent among those attending these
workshops in the wards. The wards covered so far include Lobengula,
Magwegwe, Nkulumane, Pelandaba, Mpopoma, Sizinda, Cowdry Park, Pumula
South and Luveve. These meetings were supposed to culminate in the
commemorations of the World TB Day, but they have since outlived
these commemorations as a result of the overwhelming response by
residents.
4. Networking
The association
has also been active in the evaluation of the Water and Sanitation
situation in the city of Bulawayo. It has been doing this together
with organisations such as UNICEF, World
Vision, Lead Trust, Dabane Trust, Oxfam Canada, and the Bulawayo
City Council among others. The committee has been pivotal in combating
diseases like Cholera through information dissemination and anti-cholera
campaigns to the residents.
These activities
have assisted the association to reach out to residents and get
their inputs in as far as programming is concerned.
