CHRA
Vice Chairperson infected with cholera
Combined Harare
Residents Association (CHRA)
March 06, 2009
The Combined Harare Residents
Association (CHRA) Vice Chairperson who is also the Coordinator
for ward 30, Ms Beatrice Ngwenya of Glenview 8 was on Wednesday
the 4th rushed to Budiriro Polyclinic where she was diagnosed of
cholera. She was admitted and subsequently discharged on Thursday
the 05th of March 2009. This cholera case is one of many other cases
in the area and the alleged (source withheld) over 25 cases per
day recorded at the clinic.
Residents in Glenview,
Budiriro, Dzivarasekwa, Kuwadzana, Glen Norah, Highfields, Mufakose,
Mbare, Mabvuku and other areas remain under serious threat of the
Cholera plague. In the case of Ms Ngwenya, household water is drawn
from a protected borehole which was sunk by UNICEF in an attempt
to alleviate the dire water situation in the area. Last month media
and CHRA highlighted the WHO report on water tests of samples collected
from protected and unprotected water sources.
The findings in the WHO
report were that; most of the city's water was/is contaminated
with faecal coliforms and unsafe for drinking and household usage.
The water and sanitation situation in Harare has not changed for
the better and residents continue to draw water from these sources
save for a few areas where UNICEF and other partners supply water.
The City of Harare's
water and sewer management which has been grossly mismanaged by
ZINWA, the parastatal which had taken over from the council is currently
dogged with confusion as its transfer back to Council is taking
ages. This has seen all areas (at some point in time) experiencing
dire shortages of water and unattended sewer bursts. The fight against
Cholera, health delivery system resuscitation and clean and adequate
water provision are supposedly among the inclusive Government and
the city of Harare's priorities and there is need to expedite
the processes before any more lives are lost.
CHRA will continue to
advocate for effective social service delivery and the Association
will mobilize the residents around these and other issues. The association
expresses solidarity with all Cholera victims and will continue
to explore ways of seeking socio-legal recourse on this and other
issues.
