  • Attack on Harare Mayor
    Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
    June 17, 2008

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) condemns the ongoing violence against citizens in Zimbabwe, in particular two attacks upon activists in Harare on the night of 16 June.

At approximately 11pm, armed men seized the wife and four-year-old child of Emmanuel Chiroto from his house in Hatcliffe. Mr Chiroto was recently elected as Mayor of the MDC-led Harare Council. He managed to escape, but the whereabouts of his family are unknown. International observers have been notified of the incident, and visited the site last night.

In another attack, a local organizer for CHRA was intimidated by a mob of Zanu PF militia in Sunningdale, Harare. Her two adult children were abducted by the mob and taken to a militia base in Sunningdale Shopping Centre, but fortunately managed to escape during the night. CHRA appeals to the international observers to note these events and to condemn these attacks on our citizens.
