  • CHRA Glen View members under threat
    Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
    May 20, 2008

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) is concerned with the continued unwarranted security threats to its members by Zanu PF militias. The threats come after CHRA organized a Ward election meeting in Glen View as part of its Ward leadership renewal program that will culminate into the CHRA AGM later this year. Members of the Ward committee for Ward 1 and 31 have been threatened with abductions if they continue holding CHRA meetings in the area.

The Association received reports of harassment of its members in Mabvuku, Kuwadzana and lately in Mbare. These threats to security of our members are prejudicial to the work of the Association and hamper community progress. CHRA reiterates for the record that its activities are non-partisan and are aimed at enhancing citizen participation in matters of local governance. The current wave of violence has not been limited to CHRA.

Several civic activists have been arrested, abducted and some killed in the last one month. The Association fears that the current purge of violence will leave many residents displaced and lacking confidence to participate in the oncoming presidential election runoff. CHRA urges residents to remain vigilant by exercising their right to vote and shape the future of Zimbabwe. The Association further urges all political players to desist from violent practices and to respect human life and dignity.
