Clean up campaign in Mbare flats
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
March 05, 2008

Residents in Mbare flats are engaging in a successful cleanup campaign that is set to change the face of Matapi flats. Over 56 residents have joined the campaign team and are in the process of cleaning block 7. The Clean up campaign which is gathering momentum was initiated by Mbare residents and is facilitated by CHRA has been going on for one week. The Association provides gumboots, detergents, gloves; work suits, wheal barrows, forks and brooms to help the residents who have been living in refuse infested Flats. The sewage system blocked ages ago and has not been attended to.

Sewer is seen flowing from the flats causing a very powerful stench that makes life unbearable. The Commissions running the City of Harare has also not been collecting refuse which is dumped by residents. There are overflowing formal and informal dumping sites that are a threat to the health of residents. The city of Harare says it cannot cope with the rate of blockages. CHRA assisted these residents who have been mobilized through CHRA structures to clean their won environment.

The clean up campaigns are part of local driven initiatives aimed at capacitating residents to respond to local challenges. Residents in various localities have been undergoing civic education and trainings from the Association to be able to articulate local governance challenges affecting them in their areas and map strategies to respond to the problems. A DVD on the Mbare clean up campaign is being produced and will be available on the website in due course.
