Kambuzuma residents to petition Minister Chombo
Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)
August 27, 2007

RESIDENTS of Kambuzuma on Saturday 25 August 2007 resolved to petition Ignatius Chombo, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and Urban Development over the collapse in service delivery, the non-performance by municipal employees and the continued re-appointment of the illegal commission running the City of Harare.

This was one of the key resolutions made at the meeting held at Kambuzuma Community Hall by the residents.

Other resolutions made include the intensification of the rates boycott campaign and the continued demand for the holding of mayoral and council elections in Harare to replace the illegal commission running the City of Harare.

It was agreed that they will give the Minister 14 days to respond to their issues. If there is no response by that time residents resolved that they will mobilise each other and dump refuse and bucketfuls of sewerage at the Kambuzuma District Office to register their dissatisfaction. This exercise would not be a one-off event but a regular occurrence at Kambuzuma District Offices.

During the meeting, residents cited the collapse in service provision especially the constant burst water and sewer bursts that remain unattended to despite several reports being lodged at both ZINWA and City of Harare offices.

They also said the road network system has become dangerous with potholes and dumped refuse.

CHRA reiterates its calls for the restoration of legitimate authority at Town House and the reform of the Urban Councils' Act (Chapter 29:15) to reflect the aspirations of the residents in Zimbabwe.
