CHRA says new Harare City Commission is still illegal

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) has said the sacking of Harare City Commission Chairperson Sekesai Makwavarara changes nothing because authorities have replaced her with another appointee, Michael Mahachi. The spokesperson for the residents association Precious Shumba was commenting on the dismissal of Makwavara, a political turn-coat who for years hung onto the position despite fierce resistance from Harare residents. She won the deputy mayor-ship on an opposition ticket, only to cross floors later, joining the Mugabe regime. Meanwhile the state media seems to be sending conflicting signals and is not making it clear if Makwavarara resigned or was fired.

Engineer Elias Mudzuri romped to victory as mayor on an opposition ticket in 2002, only for Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo to usurp his position, fire Mudzuri and replace him with a commission headed by Makwavara. CHRA who were calling for Makwavarara's departure have been unimpressed with the appointment of Mahachi to the same post. "We see nothing that has changed at Town House. The new commission is still illegal. Nothing has materially changed- only devils changing faces," Shumba told newsreel.

He expressed concern over the up-coming mayoral elections that have been set for January 2008, but with no specific date given. He said one of the biggest concerns was that in most areas in Harare registration points for residents wanting to register to vote were not easily accessible and sited Kuwadzana as an example. There are only two registration points in Kuwadzana, a very large constituency that includes Kuwadzana extension.

In Sunningdale Zanu PF youth militia and war veterans are said to be forcing people, particularly vendors trading at Mbare Musika, to register as Mbare residents. Shumba said this was unfortunate as it would compromise free and fair elections in January 2008.
